Ethan Alter is a New York-based film critic and journalist whose work has appeared in a variety of online and print publications, including Film Journal International, Television Without Pity, GIANT, Premiere, TV Guide, and Entertainment Weekly.

His first book, Film Firsts: The 25 Movies That Created Contemporary American Cinema, was published in February 2014 by Praeger, a division of ABC-Clio.  It explores 25 films made between 1975 and 2011 that achieved a notable first and, in doing so, helped shape the state of the modern movie industry.  Some of the titles discussed in the book include Star Wars, She’s Gotta Have It, The Matrix and Red State.
