Ethan Alter is a New York-based film critic and journalist whose work has appeared in a variety of online and print publications, including Film Journal International, Television Without Pity, GIANT, Premiere, TV Guide, and Entertainment Weekly.

His first book, Film Firsts: The 25 Movies That Created Contemporary American Cinema, was published in February 2014 by Praeger, a division of ABC-Clio.¬† It explores 25 films made between 1975 and 2011 that achieved a notable first and, in doing so, helped shape the state of the modern movie industry.¬† Some of the titles discussed in the book include Star Wars, She’s Gotta Have It, The Matrix and Red State.
